Chinua Achebe’s classic novel Things Fall Apart (1958) narrates the gradual disintegration of Igbo ways of life with the introduction of British colonial rule in the late nineteenth century. This presentation will consider the origins, uses, and fates of objects that were essential parts of life in African cultures and are now displayed as artworks in museums.

Alisa McCusker is the Curator of European and American Art at the Museum of Art and Archaeology. This museum lecture is in conjunction with the Art of the Book Club’s selection for February, 2020.
