Event Details

Medieval manuscripts survive today in environmentally-controlled repositories, but they all travelled multiple times in the centuries since they were made, whether as gifts, purchases, relics, contraband, or simply as companions, as books still are for so many of us. Elite women often circulated books within their extended families and social circles, often altering the books to reflect the identities or needs of new owners. This talk will address some of the most beautiful surviving books, whose pages reveal fascinating information about their earlier owners.

Anne Stanton, Associate Professor of Visual Studies at the University of Missouri, tells the stories of the owners behind these manuscripts.
