$2.13 Million in Federal Grants for The Loop

Great News! The City of Columbia has been awarded a $2.13 million Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to fund a planning study for the Business Loop.

A planning study is necessary to determine the state of the existing infrastructure, plan for new infrastructure, conduct an environmental impact analysis, and develop a plan for managing storm water. Features to be studied will include a complete streets design, storm water management, beautification elements, and design improvements to intersections, bike lanes, and pedestrian connections. Think of it as creating architectural blueprints before beginning construction on your home—it’s a way to make sure the foundation is strong, assess the proper building materials, map out the size and shape of the house, and estimate construction costs.

The Business Loop was once a vibrant commercial corridor and gateway into Columbia. After the construction of Interstate 70 in the 1960s, the street became a five-lane barrier to residents seeking a place to stop and gather. Our goal is to restore that sense of neighborhood and community to The Loop.

This plan will bring us closer to reinvigorating the corridor, connecting a number of historically disadvantaged and underserved communities, and supporting a growing network of community services, education opportunities, and commercial centers along the Business Loop.

This detailed planning process is the next step in a long-term process to upgrade the street. The Loop CID already has a Loop Corridor Plan—a general vision for the street created with input from businesses, residents, and other Columbians. This grant will help fund more detailed engineering and environmental studies---and help gather information required to apply for a larger capital improvements grant.

The City will work with USDOT on the grant agreement and once that’s in place, we’ll start the process. It will include input from the public so stay tuned for next steps by following us on our social or via our website.
