On Saturday, April 27 get ready for an old-fashioned barn raising as we build a park in a day!
Boone Electric Cooperative is letting us transform a vacant lot into a pop-up park with the help of ForColumbia, a group of volunteers from 66 local churches, and donations from all over town. We'll be laying artificial turf, painting shipping containers, assembling picnic tables, planting flowers, stringing lights, and more. By the end of the day, we'll have a park complete with seating, lawn games, and places for musicians and food trucks--all fenced and well-lit.
The Community Lot will be a much needed public gathering space for Loop employees, students, and surrounding residents. Although it will only last through the warm weather months, we hope it will inspire others to carve more public spaces out of vacant lots or empty parking lots.
Interested in helping out? The lot is located just east of 801 Business Loop 70 E(Dave Griggs' Flooring America) and we'll have two shifts of volunteers out working from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. We'll also have some fun projects for families with kids.
Sign up to help with ForColumbia and you'll get lunch and a t-shirt along with the satisfaction of being a part of a great community effort.
